Located between Bhandara and Gondia district of Maharashtra, Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary comes under Nagpur Circle.It is about 120 Km from Nagpur and is one of the key eco conservation zone in Central India. Nagzira’s rich biodiversity makes it a preferred gateway for naturalists and wildlife lovers. Nagzira got its name from ‘Naag’ (Snake) Temple which is exactly in the middle of the jungle and ‘zira’ (zara) in Marathi which means a perennial source of water that comes out from a hill in Pongezara. The total area of this sanctuary was 116.54 sqkm in the rear 1970 when it was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary. But in the year 2012, state government directed to merge this sanctuary with another national park in view of “Saving Tiger” project. This sanctuary is embraced by natural beauty. With spectacular landscapes dense vegetation, one cannot deny of its wondrous existence.The forest is home for several wild animals and birds and hence jungle safari in Nagzira is one of the preferred wildlife tours for jungle lovers.
The NagziraWildlife Sanctuary is a preserved “Green Oasis” and has a great importance for the bio-diversity conservation of its adjoining areas. This sanctuary is definitely a rich source of natural bio resource that provides visionary treat and pure and fresh ambience. The sanctuary has a diversity of plant community. The major forest type is “Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests”. Owing to its varied topography, Nagzira possesses variationin vegetation such as, teak forests, mixed forests with thorny plants, grasslands, bamboo forests and other trees. The varied vegetation is indeed alluring for botanists and nature lovers.
It is home of many rare species. There are about 34 species of mammals, 166 species of birds, 36 species of reptiles and 4 species of amphibians. This sanctuary is notable for its birds’ population and is a bird watcher’s paradise. Amongst the mammals, sanctuary hosts Tiger, Leopard, Jungle Cat, Small Indian Civet, Palm Civet, wolf, Jackal, Sloth Bear, Ratel, Common Giant Flying Squirrel, Gaur, Four Horned Antelope, Mouse Deer, Pangolin, Rock Python, Dhaman, Indian Cobra, Russel’s Viper, Checkered Keelback, Common Monitor, Tree-frog, Bull-frog, Six-toed frog, Ramanella Montana etc.
For most of the year, temperature in Nagzira is moderate and pleasant. However, it receives sufficient rainfall during monsoon and jungle safari booking for Nagzira is not allowed for the tourists during this period. The sanctuary remains closed in the months of monsoon i.e July till September. The winter season remains for the months of October till February. From March till June it is summer. The best time to visit is during April and May, because of better sighting opportunities during this time.
By road Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary is situated 22 km from Sakoli on NH 53 (Mumbai to Kolkata) which traverses through Sakoli. The sanctuary is situated about 60 km from Gondia and Bhandara. It is nearly 120 Km from Nagpur. The nearest busstand is at Sakoli & Tirora.
